Coachella style

At Coachella this year, festival goers fully embraced the 70s style, in both fashion and mentality. Setting the trends that will dominate this years festivals to come, there was no holding back on bohemianism; Fringing, florals and gladiators were full swing, as well as floaty dresses and cut off shorts.

Model and fashion blogger Rocky Barnes wears our Festival Mini Feather Bag, a cool alternative to fringing.

The Seventies has been a defining trend for SS15. Designers such as Dries Van Noten have looked to Woodstock inspired festival wear, whilst at Angel Jackson HQ, we have taken on the dark side of disco with our new range of AMEN and YEAH belts and bumbags, embracing sequin embellishment and gold metal hardware creating the ultimate festival statement accessories.

This season we introduce new shapes to the collection; the Nikita duffle, the Work and Week-end Totes and the return of the ‘bumbag’, which all come in a range of colours and styles.

Patterns run wild this season, with the revival of stripes and polka dots. We draw inspiration from the iconic Dazzle camouflage patterns painted to disguise and protect ships during the First World War. Experimenting with clean, bold, geometrical lines, which characterise our multi-directional stripes range. Polka dots are printed onto bright python as we redefine some of our modern classic, taking original styles and experimenting with print, colour and texture.

Viviane Sassen : Analemma @ The Photographers Gallery

Viviane Sassen’s latest exhibition at The Photographers Gallery is a fresh and exciting presentation of contemporary fashion. This exhibition pushes creative boundaries and brings the images to life, aesthetically challenging how we view a photograph.

viviane sassen photography fashion angel jackson accesories handbag inspiration exhibition

Dazed & Confused July 2011

Born in Kenya in 1972, Viviane Sassen studied fashion design in the Netherlands, two years below iconic designers, Viktor & Rolf, who she frequently modelled for. Having felt she wanted further depth and personal interaction, she turned her talent to fashion photography.

viviane sassen photography fashion angel jackson accesories handbag inspiration exhibition

Viviane Sassen modelling for Viktor & Rolf ‘Le Parfum’ 1996

This immersive photography installation much reflects the style and techniques used within Sassen’s work. Rather than conventional framed images, her work is projected and fragmented onto different surfaces; reflected off the walls and cast across the floor, creating a dynamic viewpoint for the viewer. Mirrors are a common theme within her photos, distorting the image and enhancing angles, challenging how we view two dimentional imagery.

Vivianne Sassen for Delamar

Viviane Sassen’s upbringing in Kenya is a major influence in her work. Saturated with colour and optical patterns, her images echo the vibrant culture of East Africa, whilst combining the minimalist Danish aesthetic of her contemporaries. Her striking use of light and dark beautifully depict the female silhouette, in which she captures models in sculptural compositions. These poses which would appear awkward and fabricated in any other photo, exude elegance and femininity, juxtaposed against the perfectly odd environment.

One of the most defining aspects of Viviane Sassen’s work is her use of composition. Influenced by Piet Mondrian, her work encompasses a distinctive graphic element, in which she uses block colour, clean lines and geometrical shapes.

Guy Bourdin- Image Maker

With the UK’s largest exhibition of the influential fashion photographer, Guy Bourdin coming to Somerset House this November, we pick out our favourite photos from his radical and innovative work.

Regarded as one of the most groundbreaking fashion photographers of our time, Guy Bourdin has challenged the aesthetic conventions of previous image making, revolutionising the way we view fashion photography today and inspiring both photographers and fashion designers.

Highly stylised and distinctive themes characterises his work; hyper saturated colour images, dramatic avant-garde composition and provocative poses, with reoccurring themes of lust and seduction. The surrealist approach to his work echoes the influence of his mentor, Man Ray, as well as his focus on contrast, texture, geometry and symmetry.

Some of his most iconic photos were shot for French shoe designer Charles Jourdan, whilst Guy Bourdin’s work constantly appeared on the pages of British, French, Italian and American Vogue, defining the visual aesthetic of the 70s and 80s.

His cinematic images create a strong, visual narrative, often controversial, drawing the viewers in. We teeter on the edge of voyeurism as Guy Bourdin continues to inspire generations and push creative boundaries.guy bourdon fashion photography art culture exhibition angel jackson

FEATHER FRENZY

feathers hand bag moodboard angel jackson fashion week inspiration street style erdem alexander mcqueen chanel fend thom browne isabel marant  SS15 was a frenzy of feathers, with designers such as Erdem, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, MSGM, Fendi, Thom Browne and Isabel Marant embracing this trend.

Texture has been a key focus this season, with many designers playing around with surface; from knits and quilting to fringing and fur, creating innovative and dynamic new pieces. However, the stand-out texture has been feathers. Taking inspiration from nature, designers such as Erdem, Alexander McQueen and Chanel have incorporated feathers in their collections, whether it has been plumes of birds of paradise, ostrich or rustic pheasant feathers.

Breton stripes are a sartorial classic; timeless and elegant the iconic Parisian motif has had an update courtesy of Ella Catliff, founder of one of Britain’s leading style blogs, La Petite Anglaise.

ella la petite-satchel-breton

22-year-old Ella started her blog in 2010 whilst interning at Parisian fashion house Baron Baronne, where she documented her daily life as a young English fashion enthusiast making her way in the fashion capital.

Since then, La Petite Anglaise has grown into one of the most popular fashion blogs around, recommended by everyone from Vogue to The Daily Telegraph. It’s safe to say we were thrilled to see how Ella styled our graphic satchel.

ella la petite-satchel-breton striped

Ella has taken a little slice of her adventures in Paris in the form of her Breton top and mixed it with a dash of quirky London style with a camouflage print skirt and pumps. Her look is finished off with our cross body graphic satchel in blue leather. With metallic stripes and a snakeskin trim, we think the satchel is the perfect addition to Ella’s outfit.

STYLE…21ST CENTURY LADY

The ‘Queens’ of style, Marie and Michelle have graced us with a couple of fantastic features on our new Starlet satchel on their blog Kingdom of Style. We couldn’t think of a more perfect duo to model our new additions to the Angel Jackson family; a bag that combines a healthy dose of ladylike elegance with a dash of AJ fun and frivolity.

The Starlet Satchel is the epitome of 1950s poise, with a delicate top strap to hang effortlessly off the hand and optional shoulder strap. Made from soft cow leather, the Starlet mirrors the structured lines of the 50s silhouette, with a geometric flap and signature clasp. Available in shades from matte black to dusky blue, it oozes contemporary sophistication.

The Starlet even features a compact mirror and lipstick holder; necessities for the 21st century lady. A tribute to the Princess of Monaco, Angel Jackson style.Taking elements from the best selling Atomic, the Atomic Starlet morphs into a graphic hexagonal form available in both regular and mini metallic snakeskin versions.

As ever, Michelle has styled the Starlet in her own unique way, playing with proportions in a monochrome outfit complete with an urban take on the lady like heel. We think the soft blue satchel is the perfect addition to her look with its boxy structure and compact size, nonchalantly tucked under her arm with the shoulder strap hanging loose. P.s. we love the matching nails!

La Petite Anglaise

Ella of famed blog ‘La Petite Anglaise’ is always one to do us proud with her unique take on styling our array of satchels; here she is seen showing off our ever popular Graphic Satchel in blue leather.

Chevron Crossbody Satchel in Grey and silver

Paisley is a print that remains stylish whatever decade; from the folksy styles of the 1970s to the flash of a handkerchief in a mans suit, paisley is a print that adds a touch of British eccentricity to any outfit.

As Ella points out, this charming motif has its origins in Persia and has been a stalwart of Western style since the 18th century has earned its status as a sartorial classic I think you’ll agree!

We love how Ella has juxtaposed the intricate paisley pattern of her trousers with the bold chevrons of our satchel, proving that matching isn’t always the way to go. She has also picked out the flashes of metallic in the satchel by pairing with some on trend silver party flats.

Silvia Navarro

Our over size monochrome clutch is a favourite of ours from the new season collection; it makes all the hard work worthwhile when we see how other people wear our bags!

We were delighted to see how top Spanish blogger Silvia Navarro wore her optical clutch. Silvia has been blogging since 2010, aiming to illustrate her love of fashion and unique take on trends through trend commentary and outfit posts. It seems that Silvia is not only a blogger extraordinaire, she also has her own eponymous line of clothes as well as a published book; she certainly keeps herself busy!

Not only are we hugely jealous of that idyllic landscape but we love how she has worn our clutch. The ruby red military inspired blazer with intricate frogging detail needs little else to set it off, so Silvia has kept it chic and simple with black cigarette pants and a pair of red heels. The bold graphic lines of our Optical Clutch add a contemporary, 1960s vibe to the outfit. At present, Silvia’s blog has over one and a half million views a month; why not pop over and see what all the fuss is about!

STYLE

Once again one of our favourite blogs, the amazing and super stylish girls at Kingdom of  Style has featured an Angel Jackson bag in their outfit posts. Marie and Michelle are always on the ball with the latest trends straight off the catwalk, this time round featuring checks; the look that was seen at everywhere from Louis Vuitton to Chanel. Adding a dose of their usual quirky taste to the outfit Michelle has paired two contrasting checks together along with a gorgeous straw hat in coral.

To finish off the look, she has added our Atomic Box Bag in orange snakeskin. We can always rely on these girls to do our bags and satchels justice and we are never disappointed in their innate ability to pull together a unique outfit.

STRIPES ARE BACK

Parallel Lines at Angel Jackson

From the humbug striped suit of Beetlejuice to the chic lines of a Parisian Breton tshirt, stripes have long been a classic, go-to print for fashionistas across the globe. However, this bold graphic is having a revival on the runways, as well as here at Angel Jackson with our Optical Clutch in monochrome leather. The bag can be worn across the body or tucked under the arm, and is the perfect accompaniment to the stripes trend this Autumn.

Angel Jackson-Optical-clutch-large-sides-black-white

When it comes to this trend, the old adage of ‘less is more’ is not necessarily the case. Why not take heed from Miuccia Prada’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2013 and have fun with your stripes. Miu Miu is often associated with that longed for French ‘je ne sais quoi’, but for this season’s collection Ms Prada looked to the more fun and flirty side of Parisian style, pairing Pippi Longstocking-esque stripey tights and calf skimming underskirts with a jaunty polka dot neckerchief. We were transported back to the reign of the enfant terrible himself, Jean Paul Gaultier in the 1980s and his ever-present motif of Breton stripes and coquettish take on French style.

stripes miu miu aw13

For the same season, Comme des Garcons put their own idiosyncratic twist on the trend, choosing to emphasise their deconstructed tailoring with monochrome stripes; think Op Art meets Belle Epoque, an unexpected yet striking combination.

comme des garcons AW13

Comme des Garcons AW13 taken from Style.com

If the flamboyance of Comme des Garcon’s is a little overwhelming, Marc Jacobs presented a 1960s style collection for Spring/Summer 2013 that gave birth to an onslaught of Mod inspired looks. New York It girl Edie Sedgwick was undoubtedly the poster girl for Jacobs’ collection, as models sauntered down the runway in graphic tshirts and scalloped edged minidresses. Amongst the looks best suited to Warhol’s factory there were also elegant skirt suits; perhaps a reference to Ms Sedgwick’s high society upbringing and transformation to underground muse of Warhol.

Our optical clutch comes in striking black and white or add a pop of colour with our monochrome and yellow version. Whether you go all out for stripes and pair your bag with a Marc Jacobs-esque look or want to add a flash of graphic interest to a simple outfit, our Op Art inspired clutch is the ideal accessory for this Autumn’s bold trend.

Polka dot fashion frenzy….

By Camilla Harrison.

Far from a passing trend, the polka dot is here to stay. Take inspiration from a dotty bikini clad Marilyn Monroe or the vibrant ruffles of a patterned Flamenco dress and sprinkle some spots through your wardrobe with our classic Mini Box Bag adorned in charming polka dots. The spotty delight is made from sumptuous snakeskin, and is guaranteed to bring a splash of colour to your outfit this Autumn. ANgel-Jackson-Polka-dots-stars-stripes-Mini-Bag

Angel Jackson Spotty Mini Box bag in Red/Black £275

Be it a flash of print on a neckerchief or a classic monchrome dress, the humble polka dot has long been a staple motif in a style savvy wardrobe and is regularly modeled by icons as recognisable as Minnie Mouse who was the muse and cover girl for the 10th issue of Katie Grand’s LOVE magazine. Starring alongside models of the moment Cara Delevigne, Edie Campbell and Georgia May Jagger, the mouse of the moment lent her ears and polka dot bow to the fashion world this season.

Minnie-Mouse-Covers-Love-Magazine-Issue-10-Pictures

LOVE Magazine’s 10th Edition Cover Featuring Minnie Mouse

This playful print is not just for fictional friends however; take Kate Middleton, a woman whose wardrobe choices have the ability to create a ‘must-have’ in a matter of minutes. The Duchess of Cambridge has clearly gone dotty for the humble polka dot after sporting a black and white spotty Topshop dress at two different occasions. Worn by Kate, the print becomes a symbol of young motherhood, picnics in the park and leisurely strolls with her baby boy. Take your eyes to the catwalk however, and this versatile design takes on a whole new meaning.  For her Autumn 2013 collection for Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada sent models down the runway in hourglass enhancing silhouettes, smattered with flashes of polka dots in the form of coquettish neckerchiefs, peeps of flirty underskirts and bold full length bomber-style coats. Despite both sporting the same print, the Miu Miu woman and the Duchess of Cambridge both alluded to entirely different imagery. Trailed across the figure hugging designs of Miuccia Prada, the Miu Miu polka dot look hinted at a strong powerful woman, who wasn’t afraid to show her playful side. Equally, the sheer polka dot garments seen at Chloe the same season resulted in a rather tougher, urban woman than the former.

Miu Miu AW13.14 Collection

Fast-forward to the recent Spring/Summer shows, and the print is still topping the list of must-wear trends. The SS14 Burberry show was a storming success as always, rarely do they produce looks that are not immediately picked up within seconds of the models hitting the runway. Mr Bailey it seems is a lover of the polka dot, as his collection for Burberry featured the spots in many different guises. From subtle lace circles that were scattered across delicate skirts and shirts, to in your face bold polka dots clashed with stripes, the new season Burberry woman will surely list Ms Minnie Mouse as her style inspiration.

Burberry SS14 Collection

So, where did this trend begin?

9d1adb30b81c995fc13f122171680671The polka dot has the unique ability of looking fashion forward, whatever era it is worn, and has been a favourite of designers from across the globe for many centuries. Cristobal Balenciaga, along with Dior, dominated Parisian haute couture after the Second World War. He was very much inspired by Flamenco dress (being Spanish himself) and often made use of spotted textiles in his garments. Fabrics and colours were the main inspiration for Balenciaga’s collections, and some of his most iconic and recognisable pieces are his polka dot adorned dresses, giving a light hearted twist to a dramatic ball gown.

Canadian born designer, Arnold Scaasi was famous in the 1950’s for his distinctive silhouette; a deep décolletage and bell shaped skirt. He also was one of the first designers to create the matching dress and coat ‘look’ for evening wear. Polka dots were a signature staple that Scaasi employed in his garments and he once said; “Clothes with some adornment are more interesting to look at and more fun to wear”. Perhaps a forerunner of Mr Jacobs?

Legendary avant-garde artist, Yayoi Kusama, famous for her use of polka dots in her work, has been prevalent in the art world for decades. Since the late 1950’s, Kusama has been an important influence in both the art and fashion worlds with her dramatic exhibitions and live performances. Polka dots are a trademark of her work and have more meaning to her than just a humble spot “a polka-dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka-dots become movement… Polka dots are a way to infinity.” Most recently, Kasuma has collaborated with Marc Jacobs with the LOUIS VUITTON × YAYOI KUSAMA Collection.

Moving into the 1980s, and the streets of New York were awash with Carolina Herrera’s polka dot adorned creations. From off the shoulder full length gowns, wedding dresses or even the packaging of her perfume range, Ms Herrera is a devout polka dot worshipper and continues to feature them in her collections today.

MINI BAGS..MINI SKIRTS..FASHION GOES MINI MAD!!

Step back in time to Sixties Mini Madness….Here at Angel Jackson, our mini bags are a staple piece of our collections, reappearing in different guises each season. From the geometric Atomic to the chic Samaya, there is something so charming about a compact bag; your shoulders will also breathe a sigh of relief!

Oversized handbags have been the accessory du jour in recent years, whereas the mini bag is a far more enduring style; let us rewind to the 1960s. Say the words ‘Swinging Sixties style’, and you will most likely think of Twiggy, doe eyes peeking from beneath heavy eyelashes, and lithe limbs just about covered by a mini skirt. After years of restrictive corsetry, huge skirts and coiffed hair-do’s in the 1950s, the 1960s gave birth to an era of style that was unlike anything Britain had seen before.

Fashion was hugely influenced by the revolutionary changes happening in the post-war period, and dress became a signifier for these changing attitudes. Perhaps most importantly, the streets of London were now more relevant than the static models that stared out from the pages of Vogue; what was ‘in’ was now being decided by the ‘youth’.

The mini skirt is one of the most iconic items of dress in fashion history. The original ‘inventor’ of this scandalous garment is debated and many designers, from Mary Quant to Andre Courreges, have claimed the title. This skirt was such a source of contention as many claimed it projected the image of women as ‘loose’ and free with their sexuality. The sexual revolution had certainly hit Britain in the 1960s, and in terms of dress, the smaller the better.

One woman had a particular penchant for the mini skirt, and took it one step further by eradicating the need for a mini skirt entirely, wearing black tights, t-shirts and leotards. A style icon to many, she was a key figure of 1960s fashion and her name was Edie Sedgwick. Edith Minturn Sedgwick was born on April 20th 1943 in Santa Barbara, California to a wealthy, blue blood family. Edie had a turbulent and somewhat unorthodox childhood, being placed in a mental hospital for the first time at the age of 18. Following this, her life was a whirlwind of tragedy, creativity, style and art.

Most well known for being Andy Warhol’s muse, Edie was flavour of the moment and in 1965 Life magazine dubbed her “the girl with the black tights”; her cropped platinum hair and heavily lined black eyes became her signature and her photo was everywhere. Despite having a considerably tragic life, Edie’s style is still an influence to many and is poster girl for designers to this day. For his Spring/Summer 2013 show, Marc Jacobs undoubtedly had Ms Sedgwick in his mind, when he sent his models down the catwalk.

As miniskirts became commonplace in a girl’s wardrobe, accessories were also shrinking. The typical handbag style of the 1950s and early 1960s had been a structured, doctors-style bag that hung daintily from the wrist, perfectly emulating the ladylike style favoured during the era. But of course, the style obsessed youth associated these handbags with the older more conservative generation. Handbags became smaller, of varying materials and for the purpose of style rather than practicality. Ossie Clarke even famously sewed a pocket inside his dresses for ‘emergency money’, so a handbag wasn’t even necessary!

One of the most iconic bags of the 1960s was Paco Rabanne’s chainmail purse. The futuristic style was not entirely practical, but sartorial élan was far more important than having a useful accessory. Ahead of Manish Arora’s appointment as womenswear designer for Paco Rabanne in 2011, the label showed a capsule collection of the chainmail bag, with stylist Judy Blame recreating modern versions of the piece. As Arora said of the design; “My own design aesthetic is mirrored in the world of Paco Rabanne, taking something that’s not really a fashion item and making it into one”.

The fashion world is currently harking back to the ‘swinging’ era; this season has seen everything from futuristic chic at Markus Lupfer and Eudon Choi to a full sixties flashback at Moschino. We can’t help but picture an Atomic bag to complement the shift dresses and humbug stripes! Angel Jackson mini bags may be small but they are perfectly formed, and make the ideal bag for an evening out, weekend at a festival or simply as a refreshing change from lugging around an oversized tote! So why not take inspiration from Edie, and lead the trend in mini style.
